Capture: CFP: Urban History Group, Sussex, ENGLAND, 4-5 April 1997 Originally From: Richard Rodger Captured at: H-URBAN mail-list Urban History Group Meeting University of Sussex 4-5 April 1997 Civil Society and Urban Associations Recent debate on the nature of civil society has emphasised the growing importance of an area of social activity which falls between 'the tyranny of the family and the tyranny of the state' (Gellner). Political scientists have also related this to the emergence of representative government and the nature pluralism. The social and physical spaces for the development of civil society often appears to be related to urban places. The meeting will be concerned with a wide variety of associational life - clubs and societies, labour organisations, meetings, processions, rituals and ceremonies - and will also consider the spatial relationship of this associational activity. The concept of civil society, its relationship with the state and its function as a form of mediation will also be discussed in relation to a wide range of social structures, both local and national, and in some cases international.
