The conference, which promises to be the largest to date, is being organised by the Urban Morphology Research Group on behalf of ISUF and the Historical Geography and Urban Geography Research Groups of the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers. The inter-disciplinary conference brings together researchers and practioners with international interests in the physical form of cities. Delegates are drawn from a large number of countries. For the first time, a New Researchers' Forum is planned as one of the conference sessions. This will provide: - a chance for those relatively new to research to meet and network with researchers in related topics in a specifically tailored environment - an experience for postgraduates of presenting at the initial stages of their research - an opportunity for presentations of proposed, preliminary or completed research findings The Forum is not restricted solely to postgraduates, but may also be of interest to those `new' to research in a broader sense. Non-presenting participants and first-time conference delegates are also warmly encouraged to attend. PROVISIONAL THEMES AND TIMETABLE In order to reflect the international and interdisciplinary nature of ISUF `97, papers covering all aspects of urban form will be considered and the following broad themes are indicative only - Historical urban morphology - Urban design - Design control and guidance - Planning theory and practice: implications for urban form - Future urban forms - Urban Images - Terminology and typologies: conceptualising urban form - Non-western cities The session is scheduled from 2.00 to 5.30pm, Saturday 19th July, with a thirty minute break. Participants may choose to present their contributions in one of the following forms: - Short presentation: (10 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion) This would be an ideal opportunity for participants in the early stages of research to bring their work to the attention of those in related fields. - Formal presentation: (20 minutes plus 10 minutes discussion) The longer presentation would be more suitable for those presenting research findings. - Poster presentation: A good opportunity to publicize research in progress or research findings. - Presentations in other media: Depending upon interest, we are also willing to consider computer-based or video presentations. PUBLICATION It is proposed to publish an edited volume of session proceedings as part of the UMRG's Research Series. However, the possibility exists of a joint UMRG / RGS publication, in conjunction with the Historical Geography and Urban Geography Research Groups and the Postgraduate Forum of the IBG. SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS Abstracts (of no more than 300 words) should be submitted by 30th November 1996. Abstracts and any further queries regarding the New Researchers' Forum should be addressed to either of the session conveners, both of whom are postgraduate members of the UMRG and themselves 'new researchers'.
